Cabarete is a tourist destination in the province of Puerto Plata on the north coast of the Dominican Republic and is located about 40 km east of the city of Puerto Plata, 25 kilometers of the international airport of Puerto Plata and only a few kilometers east of Sosua.
Cabarete is known for its benefits as one of the best surfing paradises in the world.
Cabarete did not exist until the eighties of the 20th Century. Cabarete was discovered in 1987 for water sports and the first windsurfing school was founded, as extremely good and steady winds prevails, which attracted many other surf schools, and therefore Cabarete obtained fame as Caribbean water sports center.
Cabarete possesses beautiful sandy beaches, and over the years along the beaches rallied more and more windsurfing schools and restaurants, and later on also further businesses, banks, and since the late nineties also kite-surfing schools.
Today, you find world-class windsurfers in Cabarete, but also kite surfing has experienced in recent years a special boom, so there is even a so-called Kite Beach, just one kilometer west from the main beach of Cabarete.
It is especially the younger audience that seeks to Cabarete Surf, and so has become discos, bars, restaurants and shops, a dominant part of the original sleepy fishing village.
